Welcome to the CFP Certified Financial Planner practice exam!

The exam is designed for financial advisors, planners, and consultants looking to demonstrate comprehensive expertise in financial planning in order to obtain CFP certification. Financial services professionals who actively construct personalized guidance and advise clients on topics spanning budgeting, retirement, taxes, investments, insurance, and estate planning are prime candidates to obtain their CFP by passing this exam.

To be eligible to take the CFP exam, candidates must have a bachelor's degree and complete CFP Board-approved coursework on financial planning to sit for the exam. They must also have 6,000 hours of professional experience in financial planning. After passing the exam, candidates must agree to adhere to CFP Board's ethics and practice standards to obtain CFP certification. Continuing education is required to maintain certification.

The exam is 6 hours long and consists of 170 multiple-choice questions. The passing score is 69%.

What is the CFP exam? 
The CFP exam is a comprehensive test designed to assess an individual's knowledge and ability to apply financial planning principles and concepts to real-life situations. Passing the exam is one of the requirements for becoming a Certified Financial Planner professional.

What topics are covered in the CFP exam?

How long is the CFP exam? 
The CFP exam is a 6-hour computer-based test, consisting of two 3-hour sessions with a 30-minute break in between.

What is the format of the CFP exam? 
The CFP exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions, including stand-alone questions and case-based scenarios. The exam tests the candidate's ability to apply financial planning knowledge to client situations.

How often is the CFP exam offered? 
The CFP exam is typically offered three times a year, in March, July, and November. However, the exact dates may vary by year and location.

What is the passing score for the CFP exam? 
The passing score for the CFP exam is determined by a panel of subject matter experts using a standard-setting process. The minimum passing score may vary slightly between exam administrations but typically falls around 60-65%.

What are the eligibility requirements for taking the CFP exam? 
To be eligible for the CFP exam, candidates must have completed a CFP Board-registered education program or hold another qualified credential, such as a CPA, CFA, or CLU. Candidates must also have a bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university and demonstrate three years of full-time relevant personal financial planning experience.

How much does it cost to take the CFP exam? 
The standard registration fee for the CFP exam is $925. An early bird discount of $100 is sometimes  available for candidates who register early. Additional fees may apply for rescheduling or cancellations.

How can I prepare for the CFP exam?

How long are CFP exam results valid? 
Once a candidate passes the CFP exam, the results remain valid indefinitely. However, to obtain and maintain the CFP certification, candidates must also meet other requirements, such as completing the education requirement, satisfying the experience requirement, and agreeing to abide by the CFP Board's Standards of Professional Conduct.

Can I submit credits from education programs that are not CFP Board registered for credit toward coursework?
You can determine if previously taken courses can be credited towards the education requirement through a CFP Board Transcript Review.

If I already took the exam and didn't pass, do I need to retake the education courses?
No. If you've already taken the exam, your coursework will continue to be valid.

What if I don't have a Bachelor's Degree?
The bachelor's degree requirement is a condition of initial certification (it is not a requirement to be eligible to take the CFP exam). There are no exceptions.
