About the VTNE6 exam

The VTNE 6 exam is administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) to demonstrate entry-level competency to practice as a credentialed veterinary technician. The current version is the VTNE 6, which was introduced in 2022. It replaced the previous VTNE 5 version. This exam is specifically designed for Veterinary assistant/technician program graduates seeking licensure/registration in their state who can demonstrates knowledge, critical thinking, and decision-making skills required for credentialed techs assisting veterinarians across clinical environments. Passing the VTNE is required for licensure to legally practice small and large animal nursing procedures under the supervision of licensed veterinarians in most states.

To be eligible for the exam, candidates must satisfy educational requirements and graduate from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program in order to qualify for the VTNE. Additionally, students must apply for and receive state authorization and eligibility determination through their state veterinary licensing agency before registering for the VTNE.

This VTNE 6 exam is 3 hours long and consists of 170 multiple-choice questions. The passing score is 425 points on a scoring scale from 200 to 800 points and this equates to approximately 55% as the passing percentage.
